A choir for every age!
BYC welcomes youth ages 4-22 with a desire to learn and an enthusiasm for sharing music. We believe that only the best is good enough for a child and strive to offer the best comprehensive musicianship training. Our choirs are separated by age/grade level to ensure that our choristers have the best experience possible. Find the choir that's right for your chorister below. Our 2024 - 2025 season starts back up on the week of September 3rd and enrollment remains open until September 30th. We then close enrollment so choristers have enough time to prepare for our December concert before opening enrollment again for the month of January.
Rehearsals are held at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church at 411 156th St. NE, Bellevue. Please note that we do not have any religious affiliation and make an effort to perform repertoire from a variety of cultures, traditions, and backgrounds.

If your chorister is in Prek-2nd grade (must be 4 years old by September 1st, 2024), you can do the following 2 things to enroll:

Non-Auditioned Choirs
PRELUDE CHOIR
Youth grades PreK & K (min. age is 4)*
*must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2024 and potty independent
Foundational musical concepts and skills are developed through fun musical activities, seamlessly embedded into the choir rehearsal.
New choristers are accepted at the start of our Fall and January enrollment periods, and occasionally during other periods when space allows.

PRIMA CHOIR
Youth grades 1 & 2
Vocal pedagogy, musical games, and traditional choir rehearsal are interwoven to provide just the right mix of fun and challenge.

**New Choristers - Grades 3 and up
A one-time vocal placement/audition for Bellevue Youth Choirs is required for new singers in grades 3 and up and are conducted by our Managing Artistic Director, Kayla Johnson. Mrs. Johnson strives to keep the experience fun and positive. The session takes about 10-15 minutes and involves having your child sing some simple patterns that will identify their range and voice quality as well echo back short, simple melodies. We will also ask questions to find out about their musical background and their strengths. Singers, while not required to formally prepare anything prior, will be asked to sing a simple song of their choice. At least one parent is expected to attend the vocal placement session.

Intermezzo Choir
Youth grades 3 - 6
Intermezzo choir skills are refined through vocal pedagogy and ensemble work, rehearsal and performance of unison and two part harmony is learned in a fun and positive environment.

Lyrica Choir
Youth grades 5 - 8
In this choir, choristers gain musicianship skills through varied repertoire ranging from unison through three part harmony. Choristers also work on their performance skills through a variety of performances throughout the year as well as their musicianship training.
Rehearsals: Tuesdays 5:30 - 7:30pm

Cantare Choir
Grades 7 - 11
This group performs in three and four part harmony, refining their musicianship, vocal production, and performance skills through a variety of performances throughout the year as well as field trips, tours, and community events.

BYC Voce
Grades 11 - Age 22
BYC would like to build a new flagship ensemble to be the representative of the organization. Members of this ensemble are expected to have musical experience and be comfortable reading music. This group will work on 4+ part harmonies, focus on healthy vocal technique, and will demonstrate refined choral techniques and singing. This ensemble will support younger choristers in combined pieces for our Mainstage concerts, and learn additional repertoire to perform in the community and on tours. Because this group supports the organization as a whole, tuition is significantly lower and subsidized by the organization.
Rehearsals: Thursdays 6:00 - 8:30pm beginning October 3rd

School Program Participation
BYC musicians are strongly encouraged to participate in their school's performing arts program (orchestra, band, choir, or theater) in order for us to maintain a system of mutual support for arts education in Washington State. We understand that there are special circumstances in which even the most dedicated students cannot participate in their school's programs. To those able, however, emphasize the importance of participation in these programs.
